In remote border communities, children often learn in overcrowded or temporary rooms, and distance keeps many away from school. VOPA supported the construction of five classrooms in Itilale, Kenya and Malkamari, Ethiopia, with funding from the European Union and co-funding from Danida under Boresha Nabad.
The buildings
The classrooms are durable blocks suited to the climate: stone walls with plastered and painted finishes, iron-sheet roofs, large windows for light and air, concrete floors and fitted blackboards.
Why it matters
- More space and safer conditions for learners
- Better learning in the heat of the drylands
- Stronger schools in communities on both sides of the border
The project supports VOPA's advocacy for every child's right to education, including girl child education.
